SAN DIEGO 2027 MEDICARE CHANGES
San Diego Medicare PPO Ending in 2027? How to Check Your Scripps Access
If your Medicare PPO is ending and you receive care from Scripps Clinic or Scripps Coastal Medical Center, do not assume that another PPO will cover your doctors the same way. For the PPO plans Franco is reviewing, these providers have been out of network but have accepted patients using their out-of-network benefits. Your two main routes may be another Medicare Advantage PPO or Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement plan. Each route needs to be checked before your current coverage ends.
Why is this decision different for Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal patients?
Scripps states that Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal Medical Center have not accepted Medicare Advantage HMO plans since January 1, 2024. That makes the plan type and the exact provider relationship especially important for patients who want to continue receiving care through either medical group.
Scripps also states that it accepts Original Medicare Parts A and B and Medicare Supplement plans. However, Scripps advises patients to confirm coverage with both the insurance company and the provider because plan networks and individual physician relationships can change.
Can you move to another Medicare PPO and keep your Scripps doctors?
Possibly, but the letters PPO do not guarantee access. For the PPO plans Franco is reviewing, Scripps Clinic and Scripps Coastal have been out of network while still accepting patients through the plans' out-of-network benefits. A replacement PPO may handle that care differently.
A Medicare Advantage PPO usually allows covered care outside its preferred network at a higher cost, but the provider must still be willing and able to see you under that plan's rules. A new PPO can also have different prior-authorization requirements, cost sharing and out-of-network limits.
This is the part Franco can check for you. He can verify the exact 2027 plan with the plan and with each important Scripps provider, including whether the doctor is in network, whether the office will see patients using the plan's out-of-network benefit, and what you would pay in either situation.
- Is the exact PPO offered in your San Diego County ZIP code?
- Is your primary doctor in network under that exact plan?
- Are your specialists and preferred Scripps hospital covered?
- Will an out-of-network Scripps provider accept the plan?
- What are the in-network and combined maximum out-of-pocket limits?
- Are your prescriptions covered at your preferred pharmacy?
What is the Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement route?
The other route is to return to Original Medicare and add a Medicare Supplement plan to help with some of the costs that Original Medicare does not pay. Scripps says it accepts Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement plans, although you should still confirm your individual doctors and facilities.
A Medicare Supplement plan does not include prescription coverage. Most people choosing this route also need to compare a separate Medicare drug plan using their exact prescriptions and pharmacy. They also need to account for the Medicare Supplement premium and the drug-plan premium when comparing total cost.
- Confirm that every important provider accepts Original Medicare.
- Verify your Medicare Supplement eligibility and application deadline before leaving your current plan.
- Compare a separate Medicare drug plan for your prescriptions.
- Review premiums as well as expected medical and prescription costs.
Does a terminating PPO create a Medicare Supplement right?
When a Medicare Advantage plan leaves Medicare, stops serving your area or is not renewed, returning to Original Medicare can create a limited Medicare Supplement guaranteed-issue right. This can allow a person to apply for certain Medicare Supplement plans without being denied because of health conditions.
The timing matters. Federal guidance generally allows an application beginning 60 days before Medicare Advantage coverage ends and ending 63 days afterward. The plans available under the right depend on federal and California rules and the person's circumstances.
Keep the plan nonrenewal letter, Annual Notice of Change, disenrollment confirmation and any related notice. A Medicare Supplement company may ask for copies as proof of the qualifying event.
What happens if you do nothing when the PPO ends?
If the plan is truly not being renewed and you do not join another Medicare Advantage plan before it ends, you will generally return to Original Medicare. That does not automatically give you a Medicare Supplement plan or a separate Medicare drug plan.
A person who expects the old plan's medical and prescription coverage to continue could begin January without the additional coverage they intended. Read the notice closely because some plans are replaced automatically, while others end without a replacement.
When should San Diego beneficiaries make the change?
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7. People whose plan is not being renewed also have a Special Enrollment Period from December 8 through the last day of February of the following year.
Enroll by December 31 if you need replacement coverage to begin January 1. Waiting until January or February can delay the new plan's effective date. The Medicare Supplement application window follows a different timeline, so investigate that route before waiting until February.
What should you bring to a San Diego Medicare plan review?
Start with the coverage you are trying to protect. Franco can compare the available routes using your termination notice, the Scripps doctors and facilities you want to keep, your prescriptions and your preferred pharmacy.
The goal is to verify the care relationships first, then compare costs and benefits. That avoids choosing a plan for its premium or additional benefits and discovering later that the doctor who matters most is not available under the plan.
- Your Annual Notice of Change and plan termination letter
- The full names of your Scripps primary doctor and specialists
- Your medical group and preferred hospital or clinic
- A current prescription list with dosage and frequency
- Your preferred pharmacy
A PERSONAL REVIEW
Let me check your Scripps doctors before you enroll.
Bring me your plan notice and a list of the doctors, clinics and hospitals you want to keep. I will check the available coverage, prescriptions and costs with you. There is no separate cost for my help. If a policy is issued through me, the insurance carrier pays me.
