ORANGE COUNTY 2027 MEDICARE GUIDE
Hoag No Longer in Your Medicare Advantage Plan for 2027? Your Options
If your Hoag providers will no longer be in your Medicare Advantage plan's network in 2027, you have a decision to make. You can stay with your plan and choose a different medical group and primary doctor. If you want to keep your Hoag care team, we can look at two other paths: Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and separate drug plan, or another Medicare Advantage plan that includes your Hoag providers.
What if you stay with your current plan?
You may be able to keep your Medicare Advantage plan and select a new in-network medical group and primary care doctor. Your plan can explain how that assignment works and whether your specialists, hospitals and prescriptions will be affected.
That is a valid choice if you are comfortable changing providers. This guide focuses on the people who would rather keep their Hoag doctors and want to compare the coverage paths that might allow it.
Option 1: Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement
Original Medicare is Part A and Part B. You can generally see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, so we would confirm that your specific Hoag providers accept it. A Medicare Supplement policy, also called Medigap, helps pay some of the costs Original Medicare leaves to you. You pay a separate premium for the Supplement and continue paying your Part B premium.
Medicare Supplement policies sold today do not include outpatient prescription coverage. If you want drug coverage, you generally add a separate Part D plan. We would check your medications and pharmacy when comparing that plan too.
Could you qualify for a Medicare Supplement without medical underwriting?
Possibly. A guaranteed issue right means an insurer cannot turn you down for an eligible Medicare Supplement policy because of your health. California law may provide this right when a Medicare Advantage plan ends its relationship with a provider who is currently treating you, if the legal conditions are met. Other circumstances, such as a plan ending, can create rights too.
A network change alone does not tell us whether you qualify. If you do not have a guaranteed issue right or another enrollment protection, a Supplement insurer may use medical underwriting. I can review your notice, available policies and application timing with you before you leave your current coverage. Keep every letter you receive about the change.
Option 2: Another Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage
A Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage is often called an MAPD plan. It keeps the Medicare Advantage structure you may already know: your Part A and Part B benefits come through a private plan, and Part D drug coverage is included. Each plan has its own provider network, medical costs, drug list and yearly out-of-pocket limit for covered medical services.
We would look for a plan available in your ZIP code that includes your exact Hoag primary doctor, specialists and facilities. Then we would check your prescriptions, pharmacy, referrals, prior authorization, copays and maximum out-of-pocket amount. A Hoag hospital appearing in a directory does not confirm that every Hoag doctor you use is in the same plan.
How can I help you choose the right path?
Schedule a Medicare plan review by phone. Before our call, gather the names of your primary doctor and specialists, a list of your prescription drugs with doses, and your preferred pharmacy. Have your current plan name and any network-change notice handy too.
I will help verify the Hoag providers you want to keep, review whether a Medicare Supplement guaranteed issue right may apply, and compare that path with available Medicare Advantage plans. We will look at your doctors, prescriptions and costs together so you can decide which option fits your situation.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) runs October 15 through December 7 for changes generally effective January 1. Do not cancel your current coverage until the replacement path and effective date are confirmed.
